Costs for RETURN AIRFARE TO CHINA, VISA, TRAVEL AND HEALTH INSURANCE are the responsibility of the volunteer teacher. All internal travel costs will be organised by Evergreen International.

Unlike the vast majority of volunteer teaching projects that charge over £1000 to take part, this progamme is NOT motivated by profit. The reason that you only have to pay costs plus a small admin fee is because this programme is organised specifically for students who want to see China and make a real contribution to the futures of children from a very poor country.

Successful applicants must also ensure that their vaccinations and inoculations are up to date and that they heed the advice of their GP and other health organisations such as WHO (http://www.who.int/en/) on the health requirements for travelling to China. Proof of adequate travel and health insurance will be required 3 weeks before the departure date.

To enter China all visitors need a valid visa. Successful applicants will need apply for the CORRECT type of visa only when given instructions to do so by Evergreen International. This is essential.

Successful applicants will be required to fly to Guangzhou where they will be met by a member of the Evergreen International team, or an appointed representative from the partner School or University. The onward journey to the summer camp is arranged by the partner school and will be by bus or car. Flights can cost anything from £300 to over £650. Evergreen International can organise flights and visas for the volunteer if required, however in this case a deposit of £600 would be required to cover the cost.

In the case that the volunteer wants to book their own flights, each successful applicant will be advised what flight to book and how to go about obtaining their visa. However it should be noted that although there will be some flexibility, volunteers must follow the advice regarding OUTBOUND flight times and dates given by Evergreen International in order that pick up's can be co-ordinated effectively.

For those who want to stay and travel around China for longer, or go to Hong Kong or Tibet etc, return flights can be arranged as desired, provided they are not before the teaching period ends.

Support In China

The support network provided by Evergreen International is critical, and it is also what we believe sets us apart compared to other voluntary programmes.

Successful applicants are collected at the airport in Guangzhou and, from that moment forward, have access to the Evergreen International team at all times. As well as having a Chinese bi-lingual assistant for every summer camp, each camp also has an English 'operations supervisor', not simply contactable by phone, but on site and part of the teaching team. The operations supervisor will deal with any issues that may arise and acts as the intermediary and direct point of contact for Chinese organisers and British Volunteers. The operations manager will also wander in and out of classes to ensure that volunteers are comfortable and confident about their role, give feedback where desired and generally support you throughout your stay.

When the teaching period is over you head off for your free tour. This is in the hands of a English speaking tour guide, who will take excellent care of you and show you the amazing sights that China offers.

PLEASE NOTE: In 2008 the Olympic games will be held in Beijing, and therefore the free tour will not include going to Beijing.

..The Free Tour

At the end of the teaching period, and on designated free days during the teaching period, you will be taken on a marvellous all inclusive free tour. The tour will consist of two or three days visiting a variety of famous landmarks in the locality of your school, followed by a sightseeing trip to a major city such as Beijing, Shanghai or Xi'an. Duration of the tour is dependent upon the length of the teaching period, however all details will be confirmed prior to departure.

Last year the teaching team were taken to Xi'an and Shaolin, meaning that volunteers have been able to experience landmarks such as the breath-taking 'Terracotta Warriors'', and the legendary Shaolin Temple as well as experience the huge variety of food and other items sold in local markets. The photos on this website are examples of the kind of places you will see on your tour, and are all genuine untouched photos of when our volunteers have visited them.

PLEASE NOTE: In 2008 the Olympic games will be held in Beijing, and therefore the free tour will not include going to Beijing.
